Punjab youth getting trapped in contract marriage frauds

Every year lakhs of people, especially from Punjab, migrate to Canada for higher education or job opportunities. The youth of Punjab is inclined towards Canada’s lifestyle and perks. But recently, another trend for securing a Canadian ‘Permanent Resident‘ (PR) status was on a hike in Punjab. Many of the youth were seen getting involved in what is known as “Contract marriage frauds”.

There is a latest buzzword in Punjabi marriage ‘IELTS bridegroom’. Young men fall prey to such matrimonial advertisements which show the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) bands score of potential brides. These men get married with the desire for a better life abroad but eventually discover that it was all a ruse. They become the victims of this latest tactic called contract marriage frauds.

One such incident was reported in 2012 with the Fatehgarh Sahib district’s NRI (Non-Resident India) wing of the Punjab Police. Jobenjeet Singh (33) filed a case against his wife under Section 420. His wife used his money to go abroad and then stopped all communications with him.

As per the official data, the NRI wing of Punjab Police received 4,266 complaints in 2019, including cases of cheating, property dispute, and matrimonial. These were filed by both men and women. In 2020, the total number of complaints was 3,829 as the pandemic restrictions lowered the number of people going abroad.

This data shows that the Punjab youth is eager to fulfill their dreams of a better lifestyle in Canada, although it costs them to be a victim of contract marriage frauds.

Mr. Gurwinder Gill, Director of ‘Gurwinder Gill Immigration‘ feels that these driven young men need a proper pathway to fulfill their aspirations. He is recognized as a top-notch expert in overseas education and coaching needs for IELTS. With 15 years of experience in visa immigration, Gurwinder Gill Immigration believes in assisting students in making the right choices when thinking about studying abroad.

Mr. Gurwinder Gill motivates the youth to pursue their dreams of studying and living abroad through their own hard work. There are several ways to avoid contract marriage frauds and earn a good lifestyle with one’s own perseverance. He explains and guides through plenty of other methods of attaining a Canadian permanent residency through a study permit even with a 5.5 IELTS band score. There are various colleges like Cambria College, M College, Avalon College, etc. in cities like Vancouver, and Montreal that offer admission to recent passout students with 5.5 IELTS bands.

According to him, the youth has the potential to work hard and achieve what they desire. With proper guidance from Mr. Gurwinder Gill, the spiked rate of contract marriage frauds can be brought down and more youngsters from Punjab can go abroad through the right channels.
